Comparison

Slimstock UK, reviewed fairly

We compete with Slimstock, so read this with that in mind. The trade we offer is honesty: Slim4 is a serious platform with three decades behind it, and for some businesses it is the right buy. Here is what it does well, where the fit gets expensive, and what we do differently.

What Slimstock actually is

Slimstock is one of the grown-ups of inventory planning. Founded in the Netherlands in 1993, its Slim4 platform covers demand forecasting, safety stock, replenishment and supplier management, and the company brings a large consulting operation to every deployment. Their UK office serves hundreds of European mid-market and enterprise distributors. None of this is faint praise: Slim4 is what a planning suite looks like when it has had thirty years of polish.

The honest question is not whether Slim4 is good. It is whether the way it is sold and deployed fits the size and shape of your business. That is where the differences start.

Where the fit gets expensive

Slim4 is a quoted enterprise sale. There is no price list, so learning the cost means a scoping call, a demo cycle and a proposal. Implementations involve consultants, data projects and training programmes measured in weeks or months. For a large planning team replacing a legacy system, that thoroughness is a feature. For a £2m to £50m wholesaler with one or two people doing the buying, the process is the product you cannot afford: the software may be excellent, but the sale assumes a scale of budget and patience many stock-holding businesses do not have.

The second difference is visibility. Slim4's forecasting is respected, but the method selection happens inside the engine. When your FD asks why the system wants £80,000 of a product, the answer is broadly because the model says so. That answer works in companies with an established planning culture. It lands badly in businesses where the buyer's judgement is still the court of appeal.

What we built instead

Optimal Chain was built for the businesses that quote-only enterprise planning leaves behind. Same class of maths, different philosophy: show the working, plan to the budget, publish the price. Every product's forecast comes from a tournament of 18 methods, blind-tested on that product's own history, and the scoreboard is on screen (demo data below):

Slim4 vs Optimal Chain, line by line

Capability Slimstock Slim4 Optimal Chain
Pricing Quote-only, enterprise sale Published, from £199/mo, full list
Forecast transparency Method selection internal 18 methods, blind-test scores on screen
Budget-first purchasing Replenishment proposals, not budget-capped Fixed budget allocated to the penny, MOQ-aware
Supplier delay stress-test Scenario tools at enterprise tier £ damage + adjusted POs in about a minute
Deal / break-even analysis Not a feature Walk-away price to 4 decimal places
Deployment Consulting-led, weeks to months Spreadsheet export in, live in days, setup included
Best for Enterprise planning teams, complex networks £2m–£100m stock-holding businesses without a planning department

Note the last row gives Slimstock its due. If you run a planning team across a multi-echelon network, buy the enterprise tool. If you are the planning team, and the day job is buying, that is who we built for. The same honest comparison exists for Netstock and EazyStock.

Frequently asked questions

What does Slimstock Slim4 cost in the UK?

Slimstock does not publish pricing. Slim4 is sold on a quote after a scoping exercise, and as an enterprise platform with implementation and training the all-in cost typically lands in four-figures-a-month territory with an onboarding project on top. Optimal Chain publishes its full price list, from £199 per month.

Who is Slim4 right for?

Larger distributors and retailers with a dedicated planning team, complex multi-echelon networks, and the budget for an enterprise implementation. Slimstock has decades of experience and a strong European presence. If that describes you, Slim4 deserves a place on your shortlist.

How is Optimal Chain different from Slim4?

Three ways. Transparency: every forecast shows the 18 methods that competed and their blind-test scores. Budget-first purchasing: type a fixed budget and get a penny-exact, MOQ-respecting order plan. And the buying model: published pricing with setup included, against a quoted enterprise sale.

Can I try Optimal Chain before committing?
